The United States Is Close to Banning Microbeads

Here's a bright spot in an otherwise bleak news cycle: On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously voted to move forward with the Microbead Free Waters Act of 2015. If the bill is passed by the rest of Congress, the United States will begin phasing out all products with plastic microbeads on July 1, 2017.
